First Stump Shoot of Summer 2025 – Our Trad Bow Tradition
Yana RobertsonThere’s something special about that first stump shoot of the season.
No targets. No scorecards. Just bows, arrows, and the same chunk of family land we’ve been walking for over 30 years—now with a baby on my back and the dogs trailing ahead.
This time, it was Cody, Yarrow, and I out there together. Cody didn’t grow up shooting traditional bows like I did, but now it’s part of our rhythm. And even though Yarrow’s not slinging arrows yet, he’s along for every shot—watching, laughing, and (sometimes) yelling mid-draw.
We took out our longbows and recurves and wandered the woods, taking shots at stumps, fallen logs, and whatever bark begged for it. Nothing fancy, just fun. And yes—Cody’s got weird form on that first shot... but it works, so we let it ride.
🎯 What is stump shooting?
It’s a casual and super satisfying way to practice traditional archery—roaming the land and taking spontaneous shots at safe, soft targets like rotten stumps, pine cones, or dirt mounds. It keeps your eye sharp and your instincts sharper.
